Photos 1-50 (DAG no. 001 - no. 050) from the Library of Congress collection consisting of more than 725 photographs dating from 1839 (the year photography was invented) to 1864. Portrait daguerreotypes produced by the Mathew Brady studio make up the major portion of the collection.

All the photos are in the public domain.
